A significant planning dispute developed at 291 Spen Lane, where a restaurant owner extended his sales area onto the pavement without the benefit of planning consent. This generated numerous complaints from the public, who objected to the obstruction in the footway.

There were also complaints about the unsatisfactory situation at the rear of the shop.

The restaurant owns the footway (this is often the case for roadside properties) but this does not allow them to build on it. The council took enforcement action against the owners, and after many months they finally removed the obstruction.
